The Apostle James expresses in this text, the object that should be our drive in our life and that is to save our soul. This soul, or from the Greek translation, life, is a part of God given to every person that is born into the world, from the first man, Adam. Genesis 2:7; “And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.” God, we know is eternal, so into man was put part of God and that too, is eternal and that is the eternal Godly part of every one of us. God gave man part of himself and that part, in God’s plan and time, must go back to God.
We are given our body to work in this life, to prepare the soul within us, and in God’s love, we are given His spirit to guide us in this objective. Malachi 3:6; “For I am the Lord, I change not.” We see therefore the importance to keep our soul Godly, for it is only those that are compatible with God, when it returns to him, will remain with him. Those that are not compatible, will be rejected. God will not change to suit us; we must change to suit him.
Our text tells us those things we should lay aside in our life and more importantly, that we should receive God’s word in meekness, as it teaches us of God, so that we know what a prepared soul should be like to be saved. The saving of a soul is called salvation. This salvation was explained in Psalm 27:1, “The Lord is my light and my salvation: whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life: of whom shall I be afraid?” We find the Apostle Paul in Romans 6:23 explained this in the following way “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” We know that Jesus Christ became the living word of God and we can now see why his words and what he did for all mankind, is so important to us. He became the only door that leads to God. He became the only Saviour, His Grace is sufficient to allow us to reconcile ourselves to God. His sacrifice washes our soul clean and makes it Godly again, and because of God’s love, this is all free for us.
Revelations 22:17; “And whosoever will let him take the water of life freely.” If we meditate on this, we will see in part, what God is like. We will see what our soul must be like to be compatible to him, and our soul should then dictate those things that we do in our life, and these should shine forth and we should be joyful in our outlook. Daily searching of the Words of God and living by them, will help us achieve our ultimate goal, to have our soul compatible to its originator, God.
An English poet summed up our word of life in the following verse.
THE GARDEN
When I was born, God gave to me
A garden, clean and bare,
With virgin soil, in which to toil
And plant my seedlings there.
As I grew up and tasted life,
Tasted worries, tasted strife,
I forgot about its needs
And through neglect, and disrespect,
It filled with choking weeds.
Then I set about my task,
With love and tender care,
To restore it to its former self
And plant some flowers there.
Now I watch with wary eye
My garden filled with blooms,
Sweet-scented plants reach to the sky,
For weeds and worries there’s no room.
Every day I hope and pray
To return the gift intact and whole,
And show to God, when comes the day,
This garden called – my soul.
