What the Schulze bakery does with the “Bread of Life” has to do with our text, Well… quite a bit. But first things first. For several months now, I have been going there several times a week to buy cakes and sometimes a Sourdough or cheese rolls. The shop is rather small, but the selection is large, and all should be well prepared to resist the temptation of the delicious-looking and tasting cakes and breads. This is a real challenge.
While I was waiting for my turn, I noticed how the sales assistants would kindly ask customers at the end of their shopping if they could add anything, if they’d remembered to pack the bread and rolls for the weekend, or if they could fill the empty space in their package with something tasty. I’ve even left the bakery with more than I intended to buy. My impression: so friendly, heartfelt, passionate!
Where does the “bread of life” appear in this?
Firstly, the many different types of bread came to my mind spontaneously when I was thinking about the “I am”. I’ve been thinking about Jesus’ words in John 6:35: “I am the bread of life.” Such good bread! The best bread to suit all.
Secondly, just as the saleswomen in the Schulze bakery in Greiz present their products in a friendly way, offer because they are convinced of the quality, we as Christians should also talk about God.
Thirdly, and this is especially important to us: We should follow their example of how to ask again, with heart, kindness, and passion, whether we can have something more. After all, we are concerned with the best bread there is, namely Jesus as the “Bread of Life,” which we want to give to all people.
The best thing would be to see it for ourselves and follow the example in our life.
