Whether we are a Chef in the kitchen, or a Craftsman working with wood, the above proverb rings true. It is much easier and cleaner to slice a tomato with a sharp knife than one that is blunt. The finish on furniture is much neater when the chisel is sharp.
Indeed, as most people know, it is also safer as the quote also indicates. When a knife is blunt more effort is required, and more accidents occur using blunt tools than sharp.
Sharp blades, however, do not just happen. They require preparation, effort, and work to whet the edge. The Preacher indicates that this will also require some natural wisdom and skill to achieve.
We can use this verse as an analogy for our faith. Wisdom must also be applied within our Christian work, so our faith does not become dull and difficult to use in our life. In this instance the wisdom or whetstone is Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 1:24 “But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God.” Faith begins by hearing and we must consistently hear the Word of God to keep it alive. Jesus Christ is also the Word of God and He is both the rock upon which our faith is built and the wisdom stone by which our faith is kept keen.
The Apostle went further when he wrote to the Hebrews regarding the Word of God itself being a sharp blade. Hebrews 4:12, “For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”
By dividing and coming between our soul and spirit the word of God becomes a protection for our soul. If it is kept sharp within us, it can guide our motivating force (spirit) to do that which is right for our soul rather than obeying our inbuilt human desires. We keep this blade sharp by hearing, reading, and discussing the word of God.
We should all use the wisdom recommended to keep all our spiritual tools sharp and ready for use. It just takes some commitment.
