Study of human psychology is beginning to understand how our perception and thinking can influence our attitudes and our behaviours. At one end of the scale is an extreme positive, and potentially overconfident mindset where everything is attempted without regard. At the other end, an overly pessimistic and negative view which constrains us from even attempting anything new. Most of us, most of the time, fall somewhere in between and slide either way depending on events and situations which are often beyond our control.
Unfortunately, our human nature is also hardwired to more easily remember and learn from negative experiences. It is not uncommon, therefore, for much of our internal self-talk to be rooted in negativity. If we are negative internally, this can manifest in how we interact with others. A negative heart may speak negative words or, as Jesus says in Luke 6:45, “…for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh”
In his time, the Apostle Paul advised a way to overcome our ‘self’ and this negativity in our lives. It all begins with positive language. To the Philippians he advised (above) that when we abide ‘in Christ’ everything is possible. Individually, and as a church, if we begin with that positivity our results will improve. This is underpinned by the understanding that only with Christ all things are possible. Mark 9:23, “Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.”
It is God’s will that we are fruitful and successful in our endeavours. Holy scripture is filled with exultation for growth, building, abundance and increase. It teaches us that to stand still or regress is not God’s desire for us. In this era of Grace, positivity is now possible and should be centred upon the victory of Jesus Christ. Our faith in Him should turn any grey skies into blue. Jude 1:20, “But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost”.
May the victory of Jesus be the foundation of our positive words and works.
