There always comes a time when our strength, either physically or emotionally, is not sufficient to get through. At times of trouble, the most common question asked is, “Why me?” Sometimes even, “Why has God allowed this to happen to me?”
Whilst it may be an uplift to know that such questioning is common to mankind, in reality, it is not helpful. Periods of struggle, whether short or long, is life as a result of corruption. A perfect life can only be a future hope for us all. The God of life desires that we have faith in Him. To have faith is not just to believe but also to trust in His word and have confidence in His promises. At best we only see through the glass darkly whilst He beholds our greatest good and has a much longer view of our life.
The poem, ‘The Weaver” (unknown author, circa 1892) sums up this difference in perspective.
My life is but a weaving
Between my Lord and me,
I cannot choose the colours
He worketh steadily.
Oft times He weaveth sorrow
And I in foolish pride
Forget He sees the upper
And I, the underside.
Not till the loom is silent
And the shuttles cease to fly
Shall God unroll the canvas
And explain the reason why.
The dark threads are as needful
In the Weaver’s skilful hand
As the threads of gold and silver
In the pattern He has planned.
Our life will not always make sense in the present, but we can put our trust and confidence that the God whom we believe in has a plan and purpose for us even in dark times. It is why we should surround ourselves with goodness and positivity while we keep focused on the goal of our faith which is the Lord’s return.
1 John 3:1-3, “Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not. Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.”
