And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God; I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth. Because thou savest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable. and poor, and blind, and naked:  I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich: and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see. As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent. Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me. To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne. He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.”

If we follow history and we can read about that church we find that it was in an area where they were very wealthy because they had developed an ointment to rub into the eyes to heal eye disease. That is why our Lord used this. Even though they were wealthy they did not have running water. They had to channel their water in from afar off, and by the time it reached that area it was lukewarm, and if the people drank it they would spew it out straight away until it was cooled down. Our Lord was showing unto them these symbols, so also the church could be seen.

He said that they thought that they were rich. History shows that they had developed within their Christian community very many ceremonies, very much wealth, robes and all kinds of things. They were following the traditions of men. They were saying that nothing could be changed. They were introducing all kinds of things within their worship. The one thing that they were not maintaining was Christ. He said Himself that He stands at the door and He knocks. Imagine having a church where Christ was not in the midst of the church, but was forced to stand outside the door, and knock and to ask to enter in so that He could sup with them. Imagine Him, the head of the church, if He came to us and He had to ask permission to come within our midst and give us His blessings. That is what had happened to that church. Down through the years we can follow history and we can see that it has happened many times since then. His promise was that we would sit in the throne with Him. We know that He is also prophesying for the church at the end time. We have to be extremely careful that we never allow Christ to be put out and have Him to ask for permission to come in. We see that happening everywhere. His words are being changed, people are being denied to partake of His Holy communion saying it is not necessary. He is being put out of the church in so many ways. He begged the people to come and try the gold that had been tried in the fire, His kingdom. He has proved that He has been able to fulfil His mission.

He has received that position, an advocate for the church.

No one else can do that. He must not be by-passed. He said that they should have taken white raiment so that their nakedness could be covered. White raiment can only be the righteousness of Christ which can only be obtained in its fullness through His Body and His Blood. He said to take the eyesalve and rub it on their eyes and see what the truth is. While He was on this earth He witnessed what that eyesalve should be. We can read in the Scriptures where He came upon a blind man and He was asked to heal him. He did not just say be healed, He took spittle and He mixed it with the dust of this earth and He rubbed it on the man’s eyes and He asked him- ” what can you now see?”   The man said- “I see men as trees,” which shows us that this eyesalve is the Word of God and it just does not come like a bolt of lightning upon us, and we can then see the truth and the mysteries of God. It comes firstly as a vision. Our Lord then laid His hands upon him and said- “now what can you see?” He said- “I see men as men.” We can see that we must take the Word of God and we must allow it to open our eyes, and we must continue to have Christ with us if that opening is going to be meaningful. The Holy Spirit has been sent to tell us what the words of God mean that come through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. We see how important it is for us to never allow Christ to be taken out of the church. We must elevate Him. We must recognise Him as above all principalities. We are certainly in dear times in the world at the moment where church leaders are confessing that they can change the Word of God, where leaders of countries are saying that there is no God. More than ever the church requires Christ to be the head of the church, and it requires the power of the Holy Spirit to testify that to the world and show that there is a God and there is a kingdom to come.
