In the book of the prophet Haggai, we are reminded to get our priorities in order by, first and foremost, ensuring that the House of God is in good stead and well established. Importantly we have to remember that we are called lively stones that build up a Spiritual House and a Holy Priesthood. If we ensure that the Temple of God is well built on Apostolic Christian Principles and Holiness, we will remain a blessed people. This is why we always have to direct our priorities toward God, remembering that we are the Temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in all of us.
Haggai warns the people (Zerubbabel and Joshua, the son of the high priest Josedech) of being so absorbed in their own houses of which the interiors (stone walls and ceilings) are covered with expensive wood, while the House of God was lying in waste. They were not as interested in the wellbeing of the House of God, because they were so busy with their own houses and therefore are cautioned by the Lord of Hosts to consider their ways. Beloved, let us also consider our ways and seriously think of our decisions in life and what the choices we make are saying about our priorities as the spiritual people of God and toward the Temple of God.
Do we take the same effort and diligence in providing for the needs of our Spiritual Dwelling as we do to our own natural dwellings? Do we shield the Temple of God with Love? Do we allow the Light of Jesus Christ to shine brightly in this place of abode (and so Glorify our Father which is in heaven)? Do we show Joy and Gratefulness knowing that everything we have is of God? Do we allow the Holy Spirit of God to be the only governing and guiding spirit (force) in our lives?
We have to understand that all is in vain if we do not allow the Lord to build the house. “Except the Lord build the house, they labour in vain that build it: Except the Lord keep the city, The watchman waketh but in vain.” (Psalm 127:1).
Without the Triune God in our lives and homes there is no longevity and durability! This is clearly described in Haggai 1:6 “Ye have sown much, and bring in little; ye eat, but ye have not enough; ye drink, but ye are not filled with drink; ye clothe you, but there is none warm; and he that earneth wages earneth wages to put it into a bag with holes”.
BUT the opposite is also true, which is if we build the House of the Lord First, we will be blessed and all those things that originate from God, and not the arm of flesh, will be durable and lovely; and we shall be Abundantly Satisfied with the fullness of His House. Haggai 1:8 “Go up to the mountain, and bring wood, and build the house; and I will take pleasure in it, and I will be glorified, saith the Lord”.
Always remember the words in 2 Corinthians 5:1 “For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.”
