We see the wisdom of God manifested through His Son for before Him on that day came two groups of men at that time. The Pharisees who maintained that the people of Israel should not be under any other authority other than the authority of God and the Herodians joined forces with them and it said that they became conniving and the Herodians were those who believed that they should accept Caesar and they should accept that through him King Herod was allowed to operate subservant to God through Caesar. And our Lord knew their craftiness, He knew that if He had said that no it is not right to do this then the other section would have been onto Him and if He had have said yes it is right to do that, then the Pharisees would have said that He was denying the authority of God. But Christ gave them the answer that they could not find their way through, He said to shew Him a penny and whose head is on this and they said Caesar and He said render unto Caesar what is Caesar’s. He was saying unto them that they had been put under the authority of Caesar because they had breached the commandments of God and through sin they had turned away from the Almighty God who had promised them that they would always be His people if they obeyed His words: They then had to acknowledge in their hearts that they were put into this position because of their own doing and He said to render to Caesar that which is Caesars, in simple terms this wealth is being controlled by Caesar because of the disobedience of the people and if you wish to now be grateful to God, then you have to obey and pay those tithes or those taxes back to Caesar. But he said render to God that which is God’s and we must be sure that we separate in our minds at all times those things that are Caesars and those things that are God’s and God’s greatest blessing that has been given unto us that we must never, ever allow ourselves to put to one side is that He has made His Son the Head of the Church.
If we take history down through the years of the Christian church we will see that there have been times where the church has allowed itself to come under the control of kings and Emperors and those in authority as did the Jewish people because they breached the very commandments of God, and the very commandments of God that Christ will be the Head and He has ordained Apostles to be His ambassadors. And when the church allowed itself to go under other kingdoms those kings then appointed men to be in charge and higher in the church where God wanted them to be and no blessings came and that is why the call is made that we must never allow God’s place to be taken or God’s order to be watered down in any way, for we must give unto God that which is God’s, and He has given us Christ as the head and ordained through the power of the Holy Spirit His ministry to fulfil His work on this earth.
We must stand firm at all times and remember that we must give back to God some offering of appreciation. It is not compulsory like it is under Caesar where it is compulsory. Christ’s kingdom is not of the kingdoms of this world and that is why all offerings unto the Almighty God must be voluntary, free willing and come from an understanding heart, not a compulsion, or a determined sum. If we can achieve that then we will find the blessings of God will continue until the end.
