Although this event took place 3100 years ago, the teaching in the story is as important today as in the Days of Samson. We read how Samson was confronted by a young lion roaring against him. It would be very frightening. In our day, this is represented by the temptations and trials thrown against us by Satan. We too often think they are beyond us and they too, seem so frightening to us as that lion would have been for Samson. We see how Samson gained a victory only by the reason that “the Spirit of the Lord came mightily upon him.” We in our day also can call on this Spirit, the Holy Ghost, to strengthen us in our battle. As Apostle James writes, chapter 4:7 “Submit yourselves therefore to God, resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” But we see Samson kept the matter to himself, he did not even tell his parents, in plain language, he did not boast about what he had done, because he knew a greater power than himself had been with him. Christ, while on earth, also taught us the same message in that great Sermon on the Mount Matthew 6:1-4. “Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them, otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven. Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound the trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. But when thou doest alms let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth: That thine alms may be in secret and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly,” and further the message on fasting in 16-18 has a similar instruction.
Certainly, this applies to Samson for when he returned later, he was to find in the carcase a swarm of bees and honey, and he was able to eat of that sweet food and also pass it on to his loved ones for them to share in this blessing. We see from this victory done in the right way, came sweetness, and so it is with our victories aided by God’s spirit and not boasted about, they too will be converted into a sweetness that the Bible refers to as ‘Righteousness’ and stored up for us to eternal life. This knowledge fills us with peace and contentment, and we are then in a position to spread this sweetness in the same way as the blessing from God could be shared by Samson with his parents. There is no happier moment in any parents’ life than when they can share the peace, love and blessings with their children.
