We see therein very good advice. We hear words there that perhaps we don’t understand what the Hebrew and Greek language meant. We heard that we should live soberly in this world. In the English language that refers usually to not drinking alcohol and being sober. In the Greek language of which this Bible is printed it had a much greater meaning than that. It meant to be calm and collected in spirit in all matters, to be cleansed, to cease to be under a power that can cause evil, self-control. That is how we must live soberly in this world. We must adopt those things. We have heard there also that we should deny ungodliness. We all understand this and we have a classic example in the days just gone by where through terror attacks we have seen gross ungodliness where many were killed innocently. We all know that is not God’s way, and surely none of us would go down that path.
Ungodliness can also be in other ways. In the commandments that God gave under the law in Leviticus 19:16 “Thou shalt not go up and down as a talebearer among thy people.” King Solomon applied the wisdom granted him to explain why this act is ungodly and wrote in the Proverbs. Proverbs 11: 13 “A talebearer revealeth secrets: but he that is of a faithful spirit concealeth the matter.” Proverbs 18:8 “The words of a talebearer are as wounds, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly.” Proverbs 26:20 “Where no wood is, there the fire goeth out: so where there is no talebearer, the strife ceaseth.”
We see that we do not just look to the big things in this world, but we must take note of those other things that are ungodly and try and live our life accordingly so that we do not fall into those traps.
We have heard that God has put together a peculiar people. That does not mean funny peculiar, that we do peculiar things that make us look different than the rest of the world. Peculiar in the Hebrew language meant a very extremely blessed group of people. As we consider Christ’s victory and we consider what it has done for us, surely nobody can deny that we are a peculiar people.
