Whatever fills our heart directs our actions. Should earthly things take up ever more room within us, the eternal and godly would be forced to move into second place. The final consequence would be that one would no longer glory in God, but in oneself.

Even if many a one could justifiably be proud of his achievements and merits, the word of the Lord teaches us to see that which is truly important and worth glorifying over — that we know God and know that He is the Lord. This knowledge of God gives us the certainty that everything which comes out of His hand is an expression of His loving kindness and righteousness (of verse 24). He makes no mistakes; in all that He allows He has our completion in mind.

We know from the Holy Scriptures how in the past the Lord revealed Himself to His people through the prophets, but we also know Him as our Heavenly Father, whose love and grace we experience very personally and who today reveals Himself to us through the activity of His Holy Spirit. If this knowledge and understanding becomes firm in our hearts, our life is ongoing glorying:

• We glory in the Lord who has reconciled us through Jesus Christ (Romans 5:11);

• We glory in the fact that through the Lord we have access by faith to His grace.

• We glory in the hope of future glory which God is to give (Romans 5:2)

What greater thing would there be to glory in than the fact that we have found salvation in Jesus. There will be no end to this glorying in our life, for that which we know and understand of God is always only a fraction of His strength and His wealth. We will only be able to grasp the whole greatness of it all when we are perfected in Christ at His return.
