God Almighty, as the Creator, is one of the foundation teachings of the Christian faith. God gave to Moses His eye-witness account of the beginning which Moses then recorded as the book of Genesis. The very first verse in the Holy Bible tells us that our God is eternal and existed before He created time and space. This is beyond our natural mind to comprehend but God gave us language and intelligence in order to learn of Him and develop a closer bond to Him than any other part of His creation.
The author of our faith, our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ was present as the Word, with the Father and the Holy Spirit, when all was created (John 1:1-3) and made good (Gen 1:31). When He became flesh and dwelt amongst us, He taught that from the beginning all things were created by God (Matthew 19:4, Mark 15:19). His disciples continued to build upon this foundation, using it to explain the necessity for the Word of God to come in the flesh and prove that this creation could be good following the fall of mankind (Heb 1:1-3, 1 Cor 15:21-22).
The Christian church set in place within its core beliefs, the Apostles Creed, which has as the first principle, ‘We believe in God Almighty, creator of heaven and earth’. This belief allowed those who built upon it to flourish, as history records. Throughout the middle ages, many of the foundation scientific discoveries occurred as a result of man’s desire to understand the mystery of God’s creation, in the belief that the natural world behaves consistently from day to day because it is held in store by the order in God’s word. God stated that He set in place this natural order to show this control (Gen 1:1) and many men of God based their modern science on this foundation. Robert Boyle (chemistry), Louis Pasteur (bacteriology), Michael Faraday (electromagnetics) are all examples. Even the instigator of classical scientific method, Francis Bacon, was a creationist. Sir Isaac Newton, to whom are attributed some of the most recognisable laws of physics and motion (order), held a deep belief in God and a conviction that scientific investigation would lead to a greater knowledge of God the Creator. All are examples of how understanding and knowledge can advance when built upon this foundation of God.
It is important that this knowledge of God’s creation and its order continues as each generation proceeds. I was at a funeral of a faithful sister recently, and her family chose the hymn, “All Things Bright and Beautiful” as a dedication to her faith in the Creator that sustained her throughout her life. By seeing this ongoing wonder of creation each day before her, she was inspired to walk by faith. This hymn was written by Cecil Alexander who was the wife of a Parish minister in Ireland over 100 years ago. She wanted to teach children in her Sunday School class about the Apostle’s Creed. She would visit the poor families in her area and teach the children using the Holy Bible, the catechism and the Apostle’s Creed. She wrote “All Things Bright and Beautiful” to help the children understand, through singing, the first principle and the goodness to be found in God’s creation. Being able to witness the awesome beauty of God’s creation helped teach the children that the Creator was still creating. They could see the bright colours of the flowers, hear the pleasant sounds of birds singing, view the magnificence of the mountain ranges and, in childlike faith, bring praise to the creator of all things.
God is still visible in the detail, in the majesty and in the miracles of His creation. Let us make today, a day, to stand in wonder and experience the beauty of God’s creation.
