Many church members for a long time, the Christmas story probably has lost its original vigour. To other people the Christmas narrative may seem strange and hard to understand. In comparing the birth of Jesus as described by Luke. With what happens at the birth of an African child. It is a day of great joy for parents, relatives and friends. The story of the first Christmas (Luke 2:1-20).
1. God used Old Testaments prophets
Our text from Micah is one of the many promises of God to His people that He would send a deliverer. How accurately Micah, 700 years before the birth of Christ, prophesied where it would take place!
2. God used the shepherds – These ordinary men were doing their lonely work. (Luke 2:8). “And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flocks by night.”
They were not expecting anything unusual, but suddenly the most wonderful thing they had ever experienced happened.
a. They went with haste to the baby Jesus! (they heard a good news) – verse 11-15.
God has spoken to us also about Jesus! Are we quick to respond, like the shepherd, or are we delaying our surrender to Jesus Christ? In Revelation 22:12-14 “And behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as it is work shall be. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last. Blessed are they that do His commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.”
b. They spread the news that God had made known to them about Jesus (verse 17).
“And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child.”
It is also our responsibility to pass on what we know of Jesus! Renew our faith; faith with works! witnessing — the great commission. As Christians for a long time, we need to be fruitful.
Let’s spark anew the fire of joy which surrounded the very first Christmas. Not merely a tradition only but there is fire of joy! That Jesus our Savior was born; not because you have bonus, a gift from your loved ones, a family grand reunion, but because Christ was born to save us, to guide us, to give us an abundant life and to help us be prepared on His soon second coming! 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 “For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout. With the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air; and so shall we ever be with the Lord.”
c. When Christ comes again, it will be unexpectedly, when people are busy doing their ordinary work—so, everyday think it’s Christmas.
3. God used Joseph and Mary – Joseph and Mary were also humble, ordinary people. Parents we have the responsibility for our children, God, has committed to our charge. God could one day use our small baby or our child to turn many to righteousness! Are we prepared to dedicate our children to God’s service? Or are we more interested in the big salaries they may earn?
4. God used the angels — Although the shepherds, Joseph and Mary were all ordinary people, the baby Jesus was wonderful; He is the “Savior and Christ the Lord” (Luke 2:11). “For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.” This was why God used the angels to announce His birth.
Christmas is our opportunity to see God, to be present with God, as we get acquainted with Jesus. We can be filled with Christmas joy because, like the shepherd, we have witnessed Jesus. We can give ourselves afresh to God for Him to use.
First Christmas, there is our assurance of our great hope. Let us go with haste to Jesus Christ, with true humbleness and dedication to serve the Lord.
