According to the text, The Christian life is not so much about building God’s temple. It’s about being God’s temple. The greatest privilege anyone could ever have in this world is to have the Spirit of God dwelling within us. The glory of God living inside us is the greatest blessing that all is the presence of God Himself.
Centuries ago, people would look at the natural temple and say God is there, that’s where His glory dwells. Today God wants us to be looked at to see “God is there, that’s where His glory dwells”. Not because we are perfect, but because people see the difference God is making in our lives.
The object is to draw attention not to ourselves but to the God who lives within us. Matthew 5-16 “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven”. God wants people to see God and He clearly lives there. People listen to our voices, what we do and what people see communicate much more strongly than what we tell them. We need to represent Christ’s labour on earth as a holy temple.
1 Peter 2:12 “Having your conversation honest among the gentile: that, whereas they speak against you as evildoers, they may by your good works, which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation.”
Haggai 2:23 “In that day, saith the Lord of hosts, will I take thee, O Zerubbabel, my servant, the son of Shealtiel, saith the Lord, and will make thee as a signet: for I have chosen thee, saith the Lord of hosts.” What does it mean? It was a royal symbol of ownership. God says, I have chosen you. I will make you like a signet ring to show people what it means when I live in someone’s life. God is saying these things are an imprint of His ownership on His children. God wants people to see the seal of His ownership on us and the difference He makes in our lives. It will take place and happen in our lives when we live as God’s holy temple.
Isaiah 1:3 “Bring no more vain oblations; incense is an abomination unto me; the new moons and sabbaths, the calling of assemblies I cannot away with; it is iniquity, even the solemn meeting.” It was God’s design for us to come together in worship. But God said not as like this I cannot endure iniquity and the solemn assembly He invites us to come to church services but is saying I don’t want an external ritual. God wants inward change that flows outward by His Spirit from the Word.
As we are God’s Holy temple, holiness is a personal life choice, we have a responsibility. Nobody else can live a holy life for us. It is our responsibility; it is not just joining a church; there is no child who automatically becomes a Christian. It is a personal lifestyle choice. It is a personal lifestyle change by the help of the power of God. (J.C. Ryle said, “We must be holy, because this is the only sound evidence that we have a saving faith in our Lord Jesus Christ”.)
The greatest privilege and the greatest blessing that this world could ever offer, we could never manufacture it, we could never buy or steal or borrow it, but God is saying, I want you to experience it to live as My holy temple. It is not about us, but it is the power of God who lives in us.
Let us resolve to take upon ourselves that greatest privilege and the greatest blessing to live as God’s holy temple!
