As Christians, our journey is simply following the footsteps of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Every believer must have the earnest desire to follow and obey His teachings and live according to His divine Will. Our Father sent His only begotten Son, so that anyone who is lost can find their way back to God through Jesus our Lord. To define spiritual victory is to attain the “full measure of the stature of Christ” Ephesians 4:13. In order to be a victorious Christian, we need the Grace of Christ, His divine Words, the armour of God and the guidance of the Holy Spirit. In every battle. It is also important that we recognize who our enemies are. Our Lord has become victorious in His mission here on earth when He defeated His three enemies, namely; Sin, Hell and Death. Sin was nailed on the cross of Christ. Hell was defeated when it’s gate had no power to withhold Him. And lastly death was defeated through the resurrected Body of Christ. All these enemies were defeated in order to fulfil the prophecies and pave the way for the great plan of salvation of mankind.
Similarly, as followers of Christ, we also have three enemies to overcome. We commit sins when we fall to temptations, and temptations come from our three enemies, which are the Flesh, World and Devil. The flesh represents our own fleshly desires which is contrary to the Spirit. Secondly, the corrupt things of the world where we can be easily entangled i.e. love of money, greediness, etc. Thirdly, the direct temptations from Satan himself where he put doubts in our hearts, attacks the validity of the Word of God which could weaken our faith. The first thing we need to remember is that without Christ in our lives, it will be a MISSION IMPOSSIBLE to defeat these enemies. We must remember that these enemies were also present in the Garden of Eden when Eve was tempted – the Lust of the eyes (Flesh), the Forbidden Fruit (World) and Serpent (Devil), which Adam and Eve failed to recognize which lead to the fall of mankind. Also, when Jesus was tempted in the wilderness, God has revealed these three enemies too. The temptation to convert stone to bread to satisfy the need of the flesh, then when he offered Jesus the kingdoms of the world, and when the Devil uses the Scripture to tempt Christ. Christ has overcome all these three temptations, not with might and power but through the Word of God – “It is written…”. This teaches us how important the Word of God in our lives is, as Christians, to be our main weapon to defeat these enemies.
In Luke 9:23, our Lord also provides us a way, how to defeat these three enemies. So, if we want to follow the footstep of our Lord, to be victorious in every battle, then we must adhere to what He commanded us. “To deny ourselves” is the answer to defeat our fleshly desires. At all times, we must always submit and humble ourselves to God. “To carry our cross” and not the perishable things of this world. The Cross of Christ is the perfect symbol of the Greatest Commandments – To love God and our neighbour. We must always carry the Cross of Christ in our journey, the yoke which is easy and the burden that is light. Lastly, “Follow Jesus“, to obey His teachings and to always incline our ears to the voice of our Good Shepherd. Let us all run our race with patience and let us not be weary in our journey, for God has promised that He will never leave us nor forsake us.
Thoughts to ponder:
How meaningful are the words, “in Christ” Indeed, IN CHRIST ALONE, victory made possible.
