Our text is a prophecy, a prophecy given by King David of the blessings that would come into the world for the Church. He no doubt did not understand fully what these blessings would be, but in a thankful heart he gave thanksgiving. The Psalm is divided into those things that would come into the world in the future for which thanksgiving should be given. It then tells the Church of the dangers that through those blessings how things can slip. It then goes on to give an account how in the Church everyone should be moved to give thanksgiving and fulfil those desires in their heart to allow this thanksgiving to be witnessed also by God to allow blessings to also come within the future.
When we stand on the brink of a special Thanksgiving Day. Within the church we can see how it originated from this prophecy and we relive the blessings that we should really stop and think about within our lives. The prophecy, as it came through the power of the Holy Spirit through David must be believed. David was one of the only kings in that period of time who never worshipped any false god, so therefore we can have confidence that this prophecy would come to pass.
We find that it begins by the Church having to extol the blessings and the thanksgiving unto the Lord, for He has lifted the Church up and hast not made my foes to rejoice over me. The foes of the Church are the same ones that are the enemies of God, and those enemies are the enemy of sin, the enemy of hell, and the enemy of death which God was forced to introduce into the world. But now the prophecy tells us that there will be a period of time that this is now lifted up. It is taken away from us, the means to be able to have those foes conquered within our lives will be put into place by our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. We know that through His great mission and sacrifice and His blessings granted unto the Church, the means now to overcome and have that sin taken away, the means to be not fearful of hell as the place of waiting for judgment, and the means of not fearing death for death now has no part within our life for it is just a passing, a passing to a better place that our Lord introduced while He was on this earth.
In the first line of that Psalm, that should be sufficient for each and every one of us to move our hearts to thanksgiving that we have been blessed to be able to be partakers of the victories of Christ, which enable those foes to be taken away. He then goes on to say: Thou hast brought up my soul from the grave; thou hast kept me alive, that I should not go down to the pit. He is telling us that death now, or the pit which is hell, does not have any relevance within our life if we believe in faith that God does not now take us down to that pit where we have to wait judgment, but we can move on or pass on. Death now does not hold that bind over us, hell does not hold that bind over us for through the Grace of Christ we can move on and continue to be blessed by the blessings that Christ has given us in this life.
We find very clearly written in the Book of Revelation the substantiation that is now being fulfilled within the Church, and we find in Revelation Chapter 7 verses 9-12 as follows: “After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands; And cried with a loud voice, saying, Salvation to our God which sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb. And all the angels stood round about the throne, and about the elders and the four beasts, and fell before the throne on their faces, and worshipped God, Saying, Amen: Blessing and glory, and wisdom, and thanksgiving, and honour, and power, and might, be unto our God for ever and ever, Amen.” What a picture! No longer now do we have to go into the pit and wait for blessings. They become automatic through this sacrifice that Christ has made and the introduction of this new way into the world of which we are the recipients. We have heard there that thanksgiving must at all times be given.
What a blessing to know that we do not partake of the penalties of the pit anymore, but we do stand before the throne of God and the Lamb feeds us. What a blessing as we wait for the resurrection. If we take note those that were before the throne all had a palm in their hand. In the early Christian Church, the palm leaf represented the belief in the resurrection, and we believe in the resurrection that will take place at God’s appointed time when Christ returns. The early tombstones that are found in Christian countries did not have a cross on them, they all had a palm leaf engraved on them, signifying that those who were in the earth believed that they would believe in the resurrection at the time when our Lord appointed it. What a wonderful blessing that we should always bring thanksgiving for. We have heard that all that honour and all that thanksgiving must go to the Almighty God.
John 3:16. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.”
