Jesus taught about a tree or vine only bringing forth the fruit it was designed for and that is easy for us to understand. The difference for mankind of course, is that we also have the free will to choose and change our circumstances. The Lord confirmed that in Verse 45, “A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.”
If we wish to be known for our good works or fruit, His teaching shows us that we must first get our heart right. When our inside is clean and we value peace, joy, love and long suffering as our treasures, then our mouth will bring forth good fruit.
The Word of God was confirming what the Father had shown to Moses from the very beginning. Genesis 1:11, “And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so.”
The very definition of fruit is that it has the keys to the next generation and growth or life already within it. Unfortunately, as descendants of Adam and Eve who ate of the Tree of Knowledge, we have the capacity to bring forth both types of fruit in our lives.
Thankfully, with the sending and indwelling of the Holy Spirit, that which is within can be nurtured and watered to bring forth good fruit. That is what Jesus also taught in parable form in Luke 13:6-9, “He spake also this parable; A certain man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard; and he came and sought fruit thereon, and found none. Then said he unto the dresser of his vineyard, Behold, these three years I come seeking fruit on this fig tree, and find none: cut it down; why cumbereth it the ground? And he answering said unto him, Lord, let it alone this year also, till I shall dig about it, and dung it: And if it bear fruit, well: and if not, then after that thou shalt cut it down.”
He seeks fruit from those in His orchard but without the fertiliser, the water and the light He provides, our natural state would only bring forth corrupt fruit. Praise the Lord for His love to mankind for engrafting us through Grace into the perfect vine and continue to pray that the Dresser of the vineyard will make our life fruitful.
John 15:1, “I AM the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman.”
