If we read how things were at the beginning of creation, we see that this gift of light from God was given to mankind before man and woman were even created, before the earth was vegetated, before the animals and birds were made, for in Genesis 1:2-4, ” And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. And God saw the light that it was good”.
Of all the gifts given to the inhabitants of this world by God, there are few more remarkable than the possession of light, with an organization enabling us to make use of it. Through this we have come to much knowledge and many of our comforts and necessities. This light shows us wonderful purity, delicacy, and variety of colours, which it reveals to the eye of man. By this light, of course, influence is exercised over the imagination of man. Now this material light is so often taken for granted, and we should always remember that ” God is light” (1 John 5).
As our spiritual existence runs hand in hand with our natural life, we must look to see how great a gift to the natural life of man fits into our spiritual life. For as we acknowledge that natural man could not exist without light in the world, then how much more is our spiritual life dependent on light? What is this light? We read that ” And God said, let there be light”, we see that the Word of God is therefore our spiritual light. In the early days God’s people had this word relayed to them by Prophets, and those that found they could follow this Word, found peace in their souls. This prompted the Spirit to write of this in many places. Psalm 97:11, ” Light is sown for the righteous, and gladness for the upright in heart”; Psalm 119:105, ” Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”
In our day we know that Jesus Christ, as the living Word of God, was sent unto the world as the Light of the World, our Spiritual being, and as the gift of natural light was given before man was born, so the Spiritual light came to the world before mankind understood the Spiritual re-birth, as Apostle John writes in 1:4 ” In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.” It was the role of Christ to bring to man the true knowledge of God, so we can see clearly where our spiritual being is going. It is to be the true light of all generations from that time – John 1:9, “” That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.” We see therefore, that the first step to finding our way is to receive Jesus Christ as that Light, and we can then share in the promises – John 1:12, “” But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name.” and Psalm 27:1, “” The Lord is my light and my salvation.”
In our day this light is distributed and becomes active in us by the Holy Ghost, which keeps the life of Christ, His words and His teachings, ever new in our lives. Christ passed on to us a great obligation of trust – Matthew 5:14, “” Ye are the light of the world:” Have we ever paused to think of the great responsibility placed on each of us individually, and all of us collectively? To be responsible to distribute this light to others? How do we do this, and what should be the result? Christ gave these answers – Matthew 5:16, “” Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify, your Father which is in heaven.” Herein we see how the world gets to know God as stated in the text – “The Father of Lights”. This light can only show up in our lives when we openly display the spiritual joy and happy influence that the Spirit within us makes in our lives, as Apostle Paul writes in Ephesians 5:14, ” Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light.”
