The transformation from a son or daughter of this world to a son or daughter of a loving Heavenly Father is only possible through the victory and Grace of Jesus Christ. Although this transformation is done by the Holy Spirit from within, there are some outward signs of this new man.

‘Putting on the new man’ is both a process and product. In this verse, Paul shows the Colossians some of the good works that witness to the transformation.

Firstly, however this message is to ‘the elect of God, holy and beloved’, confirming the necessary role that the Trinity God must play in the process. Nothing about human nature is holy therefore change is required. Having put off the old man by mortifying the works pertaining to fleshly lusts, a new being can begin to be born within. It is viewed as ‘elect’ or chosen for loving purpose, by the God of love.

Apostle Peter also summarises the process in 1 Peter 1:2, “Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied.” He then urges us in his second epistle to continue to do those things to make this election sure. (see 2 Peter 1:10). God has chosen us and wants to make us His holy people.

The product of this change begins to be noticed in our interactions, as listed – mercy, kindness, humbleness, meekness, longsuffering.

In a world seemingly fuelled by conflict, it has never been easier to let the light of the new man within, Jesus Christ, shine into the world. JUST BE KIND!

Kindness must deliberately be chosen because it is often the more difficult path. Kindness may even require bravery, but kindness itself is powerful. Our actions and words impact others. It is up to us whether they are positive or negative. Do we radiate or drain?
