Sometimes in life the daily busyness can make our journey feel like we’re walking through knee deep mud. At other times the world around us seems to be conspiring against us like a gale force headwind. During these times the advice the Apostle Paul shared of his own journey may help us (see above).
The first principal is to realise the significance of the prize that being called to walk as God’s son or daughter in Jesus Christ, gives us access to. The calling gives our life a glorious purpose and a sure hope of eternal life as our goal.
Of course, as stated, it is then up to us to ‘press on’ and continue to work towards this prize.
On my office wall is a quote from the 30th president of the Calvin Coolidge, where he refers to this ‘pressing on’ as perseverance;
‘Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan Press On! has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race.’ Calvin Coolidge
Today, psychologists everywhere are encouraging us to persevere and develop resilience for our life journey. Such resilience is often best forged during adversity. What a strong comfort to know Jesus Christ is there shaping and moulding us as we ‘press on’ to the prize!
