Psalm 46:10 “Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.”
The two texts above underscore the importance of ‘stillness’ in our life, in order to know God and have peace.
We all recognise the words of our Lord to the raging storm that threatened His disciples, and the power He demonstrated over the elements. Every day in our busy lives is like that storm, threatening to overcome us with fear and noise. Rarely do we take time when we are in the middle of a crisis to ‘be still’, but that is exactly what Christ showed was required for His peace to be present.
Conversely, when the storm is passed, we often forget to appreciate the stillness and thank God for His presence during the calamity. The noise of our busy lives needs to be turned down, the racing of our mind needs to be slowed, and we physically need to ‘be still’ so that we can look for the peace of our Lord in our lives.
Although we now live in noisy, busy, times this has ever been the case for mankind. The psalmist many generations ago, identified the need to ‘be still’ in order to know God. Modern headlines tell us that if we ‘Know God’ we will ‘Know Peace’ with the witty adding that if there is ‘No God’, there can be ‘No Peace’.
The simple truth is that for God and peace to be in our lives we are required to set aside time to ‘be still’, to read God’s word, to pray and to be content.
PEACE —– BE STILL ——- KNOW THAT I AM GOD
