Psalms 40:11
With so many voices crying out in the world today, each trying to declare their individual truth, it is necessary for us in this New Year of Grace, 2024 to daily take the time to ‘walk with the Lord’. One of the ways to do that is to read His written word and meditate on how to put it into practice in our lives.
There is only one truth, but it cannot be found in conflict and shouting. It is found by listening to the quiet, still voice of the Spirit of Truth revealing God’s word.
Jesus said, John 17:17, “Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.” In John 18:37, He went on to tell Pilate, “Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.”
In addition, we can now hear this truth given life by the Holy Spirit through preaching of the Gospel, or Good News. Unfortunately, the Apostle Paul foresaw a time when the Gospel, which sometimes requires a change of life and is not always easy to hear, would be turned away from. In one of his last letters, he wrote to Timothy, 2 Timothy 4:3, “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;”
To ‘endure sound doctrine’ goes against our human nature. We all want to hear something new or easy but only the truth of the unchanging Word of God is of everlasting value. Only ‘sound doctrine’ teaches us the truth!
